5Rhythms

After 10 years on the road as a professional dancer, I left the commercial dance industry to follow a calling from within to explore my relationship with dance as a spiritual practice and vehicle for individual and collective healing.

I am a certified teacher of the 5Rhythms® movement meditation practice, continuing in the lineage of Gabrielle Roth, my mentor and mother of the western conscious dance movement, whom I served as creative assistant and artistic ally for the last decade of her life. I’m grateful to be able to offer classes in Gabrielle’s body of work globally, wherever my travels take me.

I also offer one-on-one guided movement sessions to help you connect with your own personal flow. If you’re curious about this experience, reach out to me, and I’d be happy to walk you through it.

I believe in the power of motion, the wisdom of gravity, the emptiness of true love, the fact that there is no way out but through the body, no way up unless we all go together, no way down unless we follow the beat, no way in unless we embrace the dark.

ABOUT THE 5RHYTHMS

Created by Gabrielle Roth and practiced by tens of thousands worldwide, 5Rhythms® is a philosophy, perspective, performance art and practice rooted in the principle that if you put the psyche in motion it will heal itself. Movement is both the medicine and the metaphor, reaching across all languages, cultures and age groups to transform suffering into art, art into awareness, and awareness into action.

Wherever the 5Rhythms are practiced, a community is born to dance, to sweat, to change, to support, and to provide a safe space for each of us to shatter the ego’s hold and awaken the juicy, unpredictable, fascinating, edge-walking, rock star part of ourselves that yearns to be free.

Creativity. Connection. Community.

Together we peel back layers, lay masks down, and dance till we disappear… Only to rediscover ourselves through it all.

This is a drug and alcohol free practice.

Here is footage of Gabrielle doing her favorite thing in the world, directing. This was filmed for a documentary about her work back in 2009. From stage right, Gabrielle in her sweet little voice is giving me last minute notes on how she wanted me to embody the state of being she called Lyrical — “Lighten up. Stay in the beat of chaos, free and wild and rooted but lighter. Drop the effort, let go of letting go. Dance on your toes, whirling, twirling, skipping, barely touching the ground. Let yourself skip around the room, touching the air, the floor and everything else lightly. Let yourself feel whatever you feel; just hold it lightly. This is the time to feel your weightlessness. Let the weight of the past and future drift away. Trance out but tune in. Experience the bearable lightness of your being. Focus your eyes on your fingertips and enjoy the ride.” (excerpt from her book Sweat Your Prayers)

For a few moments, freedom.

Thank you, Gabrielle
